In addition to using the electric instruments of rock, such as the electric guitar, electric bass, electric piano and synthesizer keyboards, fusion also used the powerful amplification, " fuzz" pedals, wah-wah pedals, and other effects used by 1970s-era rock bands. During the early 1900s jazz was mostly done in the African-American and mulatto communities, due to segregation laws. African music supplied the strong underlying beat (absent in most European music), the use of polyrhythms, and the idea of playing the melody separate from or above the beat.

These were artists who cared about their art and the masses even though all too often the masses don't give a heck. Much of fusion moved to contempo moved to smooth and resulted in greater sales of albums as they progress through this chain of fusion -> contempo -> smooth.
