The words do have power – they frame reality, create discourse, shape policies; they also make difference. Negative stress (what Maslow calls distress) is the result of a bullying climate where threat and coercion substitute for non-existent management skills. NICE states that pharmacological treatments may only be initiated in primary care if there is a delay in accessing trauma-focused psychological treatments. One very effective method is abreaction which is helping the patient discuss and re-experience the ideas and emotions associated with trauma in the safety of a therapeutic setting so that these reactions can be mastered.
