Choose one coordinating/complementary color at a time, and look at potential fabric candidates. Look for fabrics that have more than one of the colors in the starting fabric. This will make the assortment more interesting and exciting. If your coordinating fabric has additional colors in it, don’t pass it up. As long as everything works together, it will add interest to your assortment. When choosing candidates, it is important to think about the style of the starting fabric, not just the colors.
Are the print scales different? Would a stripe be more interesting than another geometric? Does the assortment need something that reads like a solid to calm things down and give the eye a chance to rest? Would a color be better in a different value? Thinking now about the placement of your fabrics in the final quilt will also help you make these decisions. Some manufacturers put together a line of coordinating fabrics, usually merchandised together in the store. I find that most of these coordinating fabrics, although beautiful, are often very close to each other in value or print scale.
Colored threads can be used for the quilting that shows on the top and bottom of your quilt. You can use a thread that matches a color in the quilt, a thread that contrasts or a variegated thread that changes colors at certain intervals. BATTING Batting comes in several varieties: 1. Cotton: Cotton batting that is not preshrunk is designed to draw in, giving the quilt an antique look. If this is not what you have in mind, use a cotton batting marked preshrunk, or shrink the batting at home.
