This is intuitively understandable in the case of psychosomatic problems. We can imagine a case of a woman with migraine headaches. She may have a genetic predisposition for suffering from migraines or she may have some hormonal dysfunctions that make her prone to have migraines during menstruation. Or perhaps there is no physical basis at all. For a few years she has been having severe headaches every now and then, but now they are getting worse. In psychotherapy we find out that the headaches have coincided with her husband’s frequent travelling for business reasons.
