PERSPECTIVES At present, then, we have data relevant to two forms of psychopathology in monkeys-that which results from social isolation from birth and that which results from the breaking of attachment bonds under certain conditions.

The very fact that such processes occur in many vertebrate species serves to draw attention to a number of principles governing the development and organization of behavior which were omitted in the older traditions of theorizing but which appear to be of the greatest relevance for understanding clinical problems. From among these many principles I concentrate on two, both of which have far-reaching implications. First, the phenomenon of imprinting demonstrates that, at least in some species, persisting bonds between individuals can develop without any of the traditionally considered physiological drives having to be satisfied, and even in spite of punishment.
