Although Adventure—the mission to be accomplished and the obstacles met along the way—is the focus of each Pitt novel, there is also usually a measure of suspense and often a treasure to be found. Chabon, Gentlemen of the Road, 176. 3 Romantic Suspense Before the line “It was a dark and stormy night” became a cliché, it was the phrase (and the introductory sentence of Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s Paul Clifford)1 that epitomized the Gothic novel, the forerunner of the Romantic Suspense genre. In these prototypes, the final scene often did take place on a dark and stormy night, with the innocent young heroine on the battlements of the isolated, crumbling castle, forced to choose between the two men who have promised safety and, ultimately, happiness.

The story may be narrated first-person or it may be told in third person, but it is crucial that the reader be allowed to follow the heroine, her plight, and her point of view throughout the story. Otherwise, readers lose that emotional link with the heroine and the danger she confronts. Many readers choose Romantic Suspense for the exotic settings in which these stories often take place. The atmosphere, intensified by the isolation or foreign setting, heightens the suspense. The heroine must be isolated, either physically or emotionally, from those who might help her extricate herself from the dangerous situation into which she has fallen.
