By explaining the backstory of a mysterious box used for the gruesome yearly ritual, Jackson suggests that people can become attached to the history of their town and repeat and re-create a violent aspect of history without fully understanding it. There are many pitfalls in creating backstory that amplifies rather than stalls the story. Here are some common pitfalls and how to sidestep them: • Look for places where you’re teaching seminars.
