The endogenous level of BS in shoots and leaves is much lower, these parts contain only 10-100 ng/kg (10"^-10"Vo) of BS. It was noted also that young growing tissues contain more BS than old ones. A remarkably high BS level was observed in crown gall cells of Catharanthus roseus transformed by different strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. -H. et al, 1989; Sakurai et al, 1991). , 1989). Most plants contain castasterone as the main BS together with comparable amounts of brassinolide. The ratio of these two hormones may be different in the course of plant development.

For the 3a-TMS derivatives a peak [M18]^ is observed (Takatsuto and Ikekawa, 1986a), which is due to the loss of Me-B( Me-B( * ' 387! 124 * 1 * dol ichosterone bismethaneboronate dolicholide bismethaneboronate SCHEME 5 SPECTRAL PROPERTIES 49 water from the enol form of the 6-keto group together with a hydrogen of the 3 asubstituent. In addition, mass spectra of TMS derivatives contain characteristic fragment ions [M-90]^ caused by elimination of trimethylsilanol. Mass spectra with chemical ionization of BS boronate derivatives reveal as base peak fragment ions [M+H]^.

A second biosynthetic route was suggested by Mandava (1988), who proposed a route to brassinolide starting from plant sterols.
