At this scale Galen's shield-before it collapsed- looked like a rigid blue grid with fairly large square openings in it. The screen on the pad, though, showed a solid, blue field. Amazed, he magnified by another one hundred. The bluish surface was still solid, yet he could see now that it was made up of tiny threads of energy. They were woven together, warp and woof, so tightly as to leave no opening. The strength and elegance of it, the simplicity, awed him. The woven shield was self-contained, complete, a work of art.

What Galen remembered most from previous convocations were the unscheduled sessions that ran late into the night. As tankards were repeatedly filled and emptied, anal the air grew thick with spent energies, mages who seemed so stern and disciplined by clay laughed at their errors, argued over technique, and told the most outrageous stories of their exploits. Most of these see scions were supposed to be private, of course, so mages would create shields or illusions of walls to keep others away. Though it was only early evening, some of these sessions had already begun.

As Galen tried to erase the anxiety from his face, Fed jerked over his shoulder at the others. " Though Galen knew Federico liked to be called Fed, he was uncomfortable with the familiarity of the diminutive, especially because Fed always seemed so familiar with him. Galen's awkwardness around people made him sound more distant than he intended. " Galen was always afraid that people-especially mages-were seeing things in him that he did not intend to show. In his attempt to prevent that, his behavior around others became strained or overly formal.
